Mrs A. H. Bowden was born Marcia Avery on May 10, 1843. She was the daughter of David and Mary (Webber) Avery . The family lived in ‘Firetown’ Cape Neddick. Her father died at the age of fifty when Marcia was eight years old. When Marcia’s mother married David in 1834, she was Mrs. Mary Whittle from an earlier marriage to Thomas A. Whittle. In 1854 Mrs. Mary Avery married Josiah Preble.
Marcia’s oldest sister Elizabeth J (1837-1912) was the wife of George Albra Donnell (1847-1938). George was the captain of the small coaster “Wingearsheek”. They lived on the former Todd land. Lizzie and George had twins Cora L. and Dora L. born in 1875 and Lillian. Both Dora and Lillian died young. Cora married Frederick B. Quimby in 1895. Frederick died in 1896 and Cora in 1897. They left one child. Lizzie was the sick sister Marcia wrote about in her diary.
Caroline (1841-1876), Marcia’s next sister, married Eber Carpenter Ramsdell (1834-1909) in 1864.
They lived on Mountain Road in Cape Neddick where Eben farmed. They had three children: Olive, Wilbur and Edgar. Marcia’s younger brother was David Edwin (1849-1864) He died at age 15.
Marcia Avery and Armenius Hotchkiss Bowden married February 14, 1866. Armenius born August 11, 1843 was the son of George and Rachel (Webber) Bowden. His parents had a eight sons and one daughter.
Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Bowden lived for several years in the York Cliffs area where A. H. purchased the farm of Josiah Preble and an adjoining farm. Most of the farm he sold in 1890 to the York Cliffs Improvement Company. In 1882 he bought his late father’s farm and in1885 built a cottage, in 1886 a barn and in 1887 a two story house. It was called Bowden Square and located at the corner of Rte. 1A and Church Street. This is the where his widow was living when she was writing her diary in 1911.
A. H. Bowden was a mariner, farmer, lobster fisherman, road commissioner, selectman and postmaster. He built the Post Office building where he had a store with dry goods, shoes and boots. Then he built the “Granary” for feed, hay and wood sales. A. H. owned considerable real estate in York including a cottage at Long Sands which was rented in the summer.
Marcia and A. H. had three children. Their first child George Edwin died young.
Their daughter, Carrie Marcia (1872-1946), married George F. Parsons (1865-1941). They had one son, Hollis (1896-1918). Hollis is mentioned many times in his grandmother’s diary. He was drafted in WWI and died at Camp Devens, MA as the result of the flu epidemic.
Fred Hotchkiss Bowden (1874-1942) was the youngest child of A. H. and Marcia. Fred married in 1904 Nellie A. Freeman (1881-1968) daughter of John Wesley and Abbie (Ramsdell) Freeman. The Freemans lived where the Clay Hill Farm restaurant is now located. Three frequent visitors to the Bowden house were Mr. J. W. Freeman, Mrs. Freeman and George W. Freeman, Nell’s parents and brother. The first three of Fred and Nell’s five children were mentioned in the diary: Ruth (1905-1974), Armenius H. called “Hotchkiss” (1907 – 1994), and Russell (1911 – 1980). Russell was the baby born on March 26 when Marcia wrote in her diary “Fred’s wife gave birth to 9 lb. boy at 11:30 PM.”
Marcia Avery Bowden died at York Beach on July 1, 1920 at the age of 77 years, 1 month and 21 days. The cause of death was arteriosclerosis with a duration of many years and a contributing cause of a fracture of her femur by a fall to floor – duration 9 months.
We have been privileged to read an account of one year of Marcia A. Bowden’s life. I hope all of you enjoyed reading her 1911 diary as much as I have.
