  1. I remember Kate Marshall as a neighbor on Avon Avenue. She was older by then and plagued by dementia. She lived with her niece Anna Eastman Marshall Littlefield Vandiver who was a playmate and friend of my mother and uncle. We called her Aunt Kate probably because Anna did. Looking back when she was older Anna wrote a piece entitled “I had Three Mothers.” The first one was her mother who died at her birth, the second was Aunt Kate Marshall and the third was my grandmother Kate Doyle Hanson whom she thanked for being so kind to her and taking the place of a mother when she needed one. Anna said that Aunt Kate was busy with her work and having a neighbor like my grandmother filled an empty place in her life.
